Credit cards

If you have credit cards, these can be used to help boost your credit rating so that you have a better credit score.

By demonstrating responsible use and management of your credit card, you can build a positive financial profile of your self. To do this you need to:
· ensure that you always pay your credit card bills on time (set up a direct debit if you are forgetful)
· never miss a payment or make one late as this will affect your credit score
· try and pay off the balance in full every month. If you cannot do this, then aim to pay off as much each month. By keeping your credit card balance at an amount of 40% or under of your credit limit, this will help build your rating.

If you don\'t have a credit card, then, in the first instance, ask your current bank for a card with a small credit limit. (If you don\'t have a bank account see article: Bank account).

If you have a low credit rating, you may find that the only credit cards offered to you are ones with a high APR. In this case, do use the card so that a record of your financial lifestyle can be built up on your credit file but do ensure that you always repay the full balance every month.

There are simple things you can do to ensure that your credit card works for you and not the other way round:

· reduce / clear your credit card balances every month
· plan your purchases and don’t buy on impulse.
· do not use your credit card for a purchase that you know will take you 12 months to pay back as this will look bad on your credit file and cost you a fortune in interest. Instead, ask your bank for a small loan beforehand then make all the loan repayments on time to build up your credit rating
· running your card to your limit and then applying for an unsecured loan will reduce your chances of getting a low APR on your unsecured loan.
